Wikipedia Needs Money Here’s How

by warner on April 10, 2008

Hi Thanks for dropping back by

According to a story in the Los Angeles Times the free Wikipedia online encyclopedia needs more money. All they need to do is add a little button or form so anyone can make a donation. Problem solved.

Yea I know there is a link, I had to look on their site for a couple minutes to find it. Guys, do you think you could make a nice looking colored button?

Being the number 8 site for traffic for all USA sites they get a huge amount of traffic. People love Wikipedia and many would be happy to make a donation. Even if 10% of their visitors only donate $1.00 they will make millions.

The people at Wikipedia want to keep the site free and free of advertising. I can respect that. I just hope someone convinces them to add a simple easy to find donate button on every page.

been tried from time to time. The donation rate is pretty low unless we go to full fundraiseing banners

that surprises me, really, since so many people visit. Maybe banners seem a little much, but maybe something not too dramatic, like the little banner that goes across the top of my blog from MaxBlogPress.

Have you ever tried making a donate to Wikipedia, or Support Wikipedia button people could put on their websites and blogs? I would put one here in a second. I bet a lot of other people would too.

Very Recently, there has been a good deal of litigation by the
American FTC against blogs and website developers
for not publishing their advertising income, or existing
relationships with advertising agencies.

What are your personal ideas about how this could potentially effect
the blogging world?

it will scare some people. some people will disclose they are making money from reviews, some won’t
