Today I read an interesting interview of Matt Cutts who is the head of the webspam team at Google by Eric Enge of StoneTemple Consulting.

They discussed many current and popular linking strategies.

Eric framed the conversation well by refering to

Today we are going to talk about link building tips. And We are going to focus on advice for people who want to build links that will stand the test of time.

As you can see this is a viewpoint important to anyone who has or manages a site.

The interviw covers linkbait, widgets, reciprocal linking, having 3rd parties building links, good and bad anchor text use, affiliate linking, pay per post, use of coupons, and some general ideas usefull in building quality links.

To me I saw a theme, or I could say underlying concept, that if a link is good and useful for the reader, and given freely by informed choice then it is almost always good for the site.
To me that confirms my idea that if a site manager is really looking to make a useful contribution they will gain.

SEO and linking can be very complicated, this interview provides an informative discussion for anyone interested in building quality lasting links.
