So You Think You Found A Hot Niche?

When you think you’ve found such a niche market, ask yourself these important questions:

1) Do you have an interest or passion for the niche? If not, do you think you can develop one? Or will you get bored with it quickly?

2) Are other people passionate about your niche? If not, do they have a desperate problem they want to solve?

3) Is the market big enough, but not so big you’ll have too much competition when you’re just starting out?

4) Do the people in this niche spend money?

5) What products are being successfully sold right now to this niche? Can you sell something similar? Can you improve it, give them something they want that all other products of their kind are currently lacking?

6) What are these existing products in your target niche being sold for? Could you be profitable selling a similarly priced item? Or are your potential competitors selling cheap on the front so they can upsell, cross sell, or make their money on the back-end?

The better you get to know the market you want to sell into the more likely you are to be able to see what it is they really want and need. Never rely on keyword research alone to examine a niche market. At a minimum visit the sites that are in that niche, see what they are selling, how they are selling it; then go to forums in that niche and see what people are talking about, what they are bitching about.

You need to take a good look into any niche market to be successful. If you are an active participant all the better. About the WoW (World of Warcraft) market, it is saturated because there are a lot of hungry obsessed people in that market. The question is can you find a place there. If you are a serious or active player you can make connections with lots of others and you can find out and share their frustrations and problems. You should be able to figure out some way to offer solutions to these problems. If you started a blog and wrote a lot of original posts from your experience, sought places to guest post, commented regularly in related forums and blogs, then did everything possible to get people in that community on a list where you could continue to build a relationship you would probably do pretty well. If you have any budget for advertising use it to drive people to a squeeze page to get them on your list. You can add some offers on your thank you or download page. Of course you will need to come up with something to incentive them to join your list; something that solves a problem they have. In the WOW market there are the obvious products but there are always connected markets. Maybe what they really want to buy is a software that somehow makes it look like they are not actually playing WoW while they are at work or ways to not have a sore back or blurry vision from sitting at the computer until 4 AM, again. Monetizing a niche is a natural outgrowth if seeing something in that market where there is a need. The higher the need the more likely it will have buyers. Like Gary Halbert said “find me a hungry market”

Finding a hot market can make or break an online business. Here is an example of seeing a problem in a market and considerations on how it can be leveraged.

Bike theft is a growing problem, I have been seeing stories in the papers (yes some people still read newspapers). There are stories you could quote and maybe create a press release too. Some people have gotten their bikes back using twitter. There could be insurance and I would have plenty of locks available, a main category on theft prevention. A free “how to not get your bike stolen” or “theft proof your bike” would probably be good list bait.

So here one could leverage news for traffic, provide a useful ebook or video on prevention to build a list and offer products people need to be able to protect themselves from the lowlife stinking thieves. I have had 3 bikes stolen and had considered making a seat that when left activated would extrude ink and pepper spray.

I have heard of cops some places putting out bikes with tracking devices so they could follow the thieves back to where they run the business. Many thefts are done by organized rings.

Ask.com has a new beta tab called Q&A that shows results from your keyword or phrase search from Answer sites.

The questions people are asking in your niche tell you what they want and need. Notice the recurring similar questions. I am wondering if this could be more accurate than polls because someone went online, found a site, and asked a question. Polls are good but the questions asked may not speak to the real need and people can be affected by who is asking, how they ask, when and where they are asking.

To have a successful niche market it needs to be one where people are buying and one you can compete in.

With today’s economy people tend to spend on things they need and they want them at a discount or with a coupon. Think about what people need. Even in bad markets people need things. I have been recently selling a car. Cars is one of the worst markets to sell anything in, yet people who have wrecked their cars need a carand that was who some of the people who looked at this car were. So in our daily lives there are still things we need and must have. Recently I read an article on how companies adding discount and coupon to their ads are seeing increased sales.

As humans we get involved deeply in some things. Collections, clubs, sports, fashion. To some people these things are thier lives. They think, live and breathe something that facinates and involves them. Have you ever climbed a 2000 foot cliff? Me either, and I won’t, but the people who do live this deeply. When you can provide something that helps that person he will want it.

Finding These Words

The words people use when they talk about what it is the have a passion for tells you the words to use to search for where they are online and see what they will respond to.
It really takes sitting down and searching google to find and follow these discussions and see the terms they use.

Once I find a set of terms I check for google related searches then run all those phrases at Google Insights for Search. It is kind of like Google trends but you can compare 5 terms at a time and you get regional results and related terms.

I ran the name of a product I am offering in a niche there today and found a rising number of searches for the product name with ebay. Then I checked google search to see how competative this is. I got 194,000 searches, but only 24 for the full term in quotes then I knew I can compete for this term easily when the result for (inanchor: product name ebay) was only 38. The inanchor followed by : and a space tells you how many people are really working for that term because it shows how many times a link with the phrase in quuestion has been used.

Inanchor: is also important because it is fairly easy to create inanchor links with articles, web 2 sites and blog comments. There are other ways but I like how these are fast and easy. I use sites like Squidoo, Hubpages, Weebly.com wetpaint.com to quickly make sites and add anchor links. I also like creating accounts at video sites because you can often put anchor links in your profile.

One new easy way to create videos is with animoto.com. All you need to do is upload some images and they provide the rest and turn out attractive videos. I pus the on youtube and make sure my link is in the description. I also use Tubemogul.com which will put your videos in many sites for free and track the views. It is not just about viewers it also about hwo good these sites are for links.

This morning I see one of my terms is getting me 6 out of 10 results on page one of google. It is a very competative niche though not a super competative term. As time goes on by building links with blog posts, web 2 sites, articles, commenting blogs, and videos I will grow my listings in this niche.

Start where you can gain entry, even in competative niches there are related terms that can be found, then as you continue to build you will rank for more terms.

This is a pretty solid indicator. Go to Google Adwords External Keyword Tool and run some of your main keywords. Make sure to click the show/hide columns drop down and select "Show Estimated Avg. CPC". If you see people paying a lot for each click that is a good indicator people are making money in that niche. Also check down the list to see if there are many words showing a lot of traffic.

To be successful in niche marketing it is important to find the longtail keywords with the least competition and most searches. This is how you will get free search engine results and traffic.

You may already be familiar with the often sited method of niche marketing keyword research. Take your keywords which show enough monthly search volume, wrap them in quotation marks then search at Google. The result of the number of competitive sites that show for that keyword or keyword phrase determines if it is good for niche marketing.

This is a reasonable method that is workable and often effective. Does this tell you how many competitive sites are fully SEO’d for that? No.

There could be other interpretations of what fully SEO’d means that could include the other biggest factor links. For this discussion of keyword research I will use these on site factors. KW used in title, KW used in URL, KW used in body of page.

Let me backtrack a moment and mention that KW used in body of page typically means the KW is used in bold, in italics, and 3-4 times per page. It is not good to overload a page with the same keyword. Another trick to optimize for search is to use related keywords and phrases. In reality nobody can anticipate every possible search on any niche topic so remember to use lots of good quality original content for best results

WordPress is particularly useful here because if you had set up your permalinks to show the title in the url you are well set. (select custom on the permalinks page then use: %catagories%post%)

Maybe right now you are wondering how to find fully SEO’d keywords. Here is what i do; I use this tool Micro Niche Finder. It does good discovery and offers a lot of options all geared to finding niche keywords.

Sometimes I do find it usefull to use the Google Adwords Keyword Tool and for building big keyword lists Nichebot since it gives access to a bunch of different tools.
