Strategic Internet Marketing means knowing who your customer is and where they are online. Are they searching at Google for the solution to a specific problem? Are they socializing on Facebook? Are they in a forum about Scuba Diving?

How old are they? How much do they make? Are they married? Do they have kids? Are they well educated or visual thinkers? I think a lot of well educated people are so intellectual they are out of touch with their hunches and intuition. A lot of people who are not well educated are every bit as smart or smarter than educated people but are visual thinkers who tend to be less articulate yet better in touch with intuition. That is another story, so I hope you can forgive my digression.

It really helps to try to paint a picture of what your best and most likely customer looks like and try to understand what his life feels like and what is important to him. I recently heard John Carlton, the copywriter, talking about one of his clients forgetting about the young yuppie golfers most of the mainstream golf magazines go after and marketing to the everyday guy that wants to hit the ball farther so he has bragging rights even though he has chronic back pain. They made a clear image of the client and focused on supplying solutions he is attracted to.

Fortunately much of what people do online leaves tracks and trails so when you determine what they are like you can go find them. Searches, blogs, forums, and social networks all can reveal what problems and needs this person has. Your task then becomes offering a solution in a way they will find attractive. One that gets their attention and can stand out in the crowd. So we come to another question which means you should subscribe to this blog to catch the further discussion.
