Google can be so cryptic and mysterious so maybe you have heard about Google Caffeine and are worried about how it will affect your websites and blog search results. Here is the straight news from Matt Cutts of Google and Search Engine Watch, and a link so you can go try Google Caffeine yourself right now.

Here are some interesting reads

“Caffeine includes, as Cutts tells us, a top-to-bottom rewrite of the Google’s indexing system – i.e., the system that builds a database of all known websites, complete with all the metadata needed to describe them. It’s not an effort to change the way that index is used to generate search results.” – Matt Cutts

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/08/14/google_caffeine_truth/

August 10, 2009
Meet the New Google. Not That Much Different from the Old Google.

“Ok, so you big time search geeks are going to notice the changes in the new Google architecture. But the vast majority of people? Probably not so much. I know Google said the changes would only be noticeable to “power users” but since they don’t always make announcements about what they’re testing (or when algorithm updates occur), I thought there would be something more to this update. (Yes, I know this is an architecture and not *necessarily* algorithm.)

What you’ll want to know that there is a slight de-emphasis on Wikipedia (by about 1 ranking on several searches), which should make many SEOs happy. There’s also a noticeable demotion of universal search, but that could change with use by testers, so keep an eye on it.

It is faster – many times over twice as fast, but this could be the result of using a smaller data set for the preview. Also, whenever it’s faster, there are far fewer pages indexed, further suggesting the smaller data set theory.

The new Google also leaves out the icons for commenting, promoting, and removing results, but those are only available when you’re signed in anyway.

On the flip side, there’s some switch-up of the top ten, which can be frustrating. But that’s all in a day’s work for the average SEO. (I’ve watched sites shift around in the SERPs in a single day.)

Check out these comparison searches below. Click on an image to enlarge. Old Google on the left, New Google on the right.”

Here it comes. soon, very soon. A big new initiative by Google to make various social profiles interconnected and to make it so anyone “can add a snippet of code to his or her site and get social features up and running immediately without programming”

Just read about this in depth at City Social Marketing Blog

David Glazer, director of engineering at Google, described Friend Connect, whose site is inaccessible Monday morning, as plumbing for the rest of the Web.

“The Web is getting better by getting more social. We’ve baked social features into the infrastructure of the Web, and it is not tied to any particular site,” Glazer said. “Users can interact with any of their friends anywhere they go on Web, and with any app.”

According to Dan Farber, of CNET News:

Google will join Facebook and MySpace, which launched ways to port user data to partner sites this week. Facebook Connect will provide the hooks to let users port their friends, profile photos, events, and other data across the Web to partner sites. MySpace on Thursday announced Data Availability, with Yahoo, eBay, Photobucket, and Twitter as initial partners for its effort to let members port their data.

Google also said:

Visitors to websites which use Friend Connect will have the ability to “see, invite, and interact with new friends, or, using secure authorization APIs, with existing friends from social sites on the web, including Facebook, Google Talk, hi5, orkut, Plaxo, and more”.

Exactly what it will be is going to happen only hours from now at http://www.google.com/friendconnect , as of this writing that link is 404

Google’s Jeff Waltz says…

“We are working on strategies to level the playing field, effectively bringing back natural search patterns enjoyed in the pre-social bookmarking days. For webmasters who use social media responsibly, this is nothing to worry about – we will be targeting mainly a small minority of prolific bookmarkers with a new algorithm that looks at linking patterns over time.

Webmasters who rely heavily on bookmarking their own sites to gain traffic will likely see a drop in pagerank before the end of 2008, and we will be working closely with two major social bookmarking sites to find a solution that will have no detrimental effect on the average internet user.”

There is some insightful discussion of this at The Promote Your Site Blog

It seems if you are activly involved in actually socializing you will be OK. If you are abusing the system your site will be penalized.

I agree something has to be done and it is reasonable to expect this. When I run some searches the results lean toward social sites too much.

My experience in social bookmarking shows me the best way to get the most out of the social networks is to be actively involved. I enjoy my time spent there as well.

Business in reality needs to have a healthy dose of feedback. To get known as a marketer is a good thing. The relationships I have built are definitely good for my business. Being in contact with people and seeing what they are about and what is important to them.

Google dot org may be a google site you have not heard of yet.

I just found out myself a couple days ago from the New York Times. Their first paragraph kind of sums it up.

Searching for solutions

Google.org aspires to use the power of information and technology to address the global challenges of our age: climate change, poverty and emerging disease. In collaboration with experienced partners working in each of these fields, we will invest our resources and tap the strengths of Google’s employees and global operations to advance five major initiatives

As much as some people love to rail against the power of corporations they do have the power to throw billions of dollars at solving some really big problems we all face.

I am glad to see good things being done. I hope as Google travels on it it’s pursuits they remain solid on knowing a company is only as good as how well they serve their customers.

Google has applied for a patent where search robots will be able to read and understand text in images.
The patent application includes the ability to read text in still images and video.

A full copy of the Patent can be viewed here.

“Title: RECOGNIZING TEXT IN IMAGES
Abstract:
Methods, systems, and apparatus including computer program products for using extracted image text are provided. In one implementation, a computer-implemented method is provided. The method includes receiving an input of one or more image search terms and identifying keywords from the received one or more image search terms. The method also includes searching a collection of keywords including keywords extracted from image text, retrieving an image associated with extracted image text corresponding to one or more of the image search terms, and presenting the image.”

By making every image and video fully searchable google search results will change in ways it may be difficult to forcast. There are many internet marketers using video who will probably find this a big plus. Images of scanned text and books will now be searchable. If you put the word copyright and “you name” on a photo or video you had on the net you could be able to find people who are using your photo without your permission because you could search for it.

What effect do you think this new ability for Google to read images will have, please comment, I am curious.
